cork

y’ever get home from a thrifting outing all psyched cuz you got a wicked cool skruf sweden decanter for one dollar and then you suddenly realize why it was one dollar and why it was at the thrift store?

well, i have.

that cork ain’t budging.  she’s never coming out.

nope.  never.

ahh, thrifting.

jeans and ceramics

i’m pretty sure i just thrifted some dungarees that could be the coolest pair of levis in the world.

these jeans scream “AMERICA” despite the souvenir patches from france and germany.

just a good ol’ pair of american levis that will NOT GIVE UP no matter how much wear and tear.

will ya look at that stitching?!?!

these are ART.

also found a couple arabia finland bowls that are a little different (to me.)

small dish with fish.

and another bowl with golden flowers.  apparently flowers called carolina jessamine.  or evening trumpet flower.

and that is your horticulture lesson for the day.

designed by hilkka liisa ahola.

also, a vintage franciscan earthenware serving bowl in a cool aztecky pattern.  hacienda gold.

and a cute little scandinavian-ish shaped vase.

and that’s the way i like to spend a holiday.

smoothie

in the same vein that i’ve never been a cat gal, i have also never been one to down a smoothie for breakfast.  like, never.  never went to an orange julius, never went to a jamba juice.  ok, maybe once in the 80s i had an orange julius.  me, i like the act of chewing food and swallowing food too much.  why grind up chewable food in a blender?  i would hear about people going on liquid diets and could never imagine such torture.   i need the chomp, chomp, chomp satisfaction.

so a coupla few weeks ago i went on a raw foods diet, just as a way to drop a couple pounds and purge the bod a little.  nothing dramatic, nothing drastic.  i ate a ton of food.  fruits, veggies, raw almond butter.  and drank a ton of tea.  ginger tea is my favorite and i don’t really like tea, but i do enjoy a ginger tea.  and this is when i decided to invite the smoothie into my life for a little variety.  not the “green drink” that i probably should be having every morning, with fresh veggies.  i went the fruit route.  bananas and blueberries and flax seed and some organic juice and ice cubes whipped up in my magic bullet

turns out i like them.

i’d probably love them with rum or vodka, but so far haven’t experimented.  i told you, i’m trying to purge.  cleanse the highways and byways that run through the inner workings of this body of mine.

i’m pretty sure the main reason i like these smoothies is cuz i get to use the bigger vintage glassware i’ve collected and never use cuz i don’t normally like to drink out of big glasses.  smoothies are MADE for vintage tumblers.

so, what’s that green candleholder in the background, i hear you asking.

when i picked it up to look at it in the thrift store i couldn’t believe when it said “denmark” on the bottom.  not to mention it was dirt cheap.  almus keramik.  i’ll take it.

that’s it for me.  i’m drinkin’ smoothies.  earth shattering, i know.

cat

ok, let’s review.

cats.

not a fan.

not a cat girl.

never liked ’em.

never will.

and yet…

when overpriced goodwill puts a less-than-a-buck price tag on an aarikka finland  wooden cat, somehow i gotta buy it.

cuz i’m greedy and won’t leave it for someone who really really IS a cat person.

i am slowly, but definitely surely, becoming an old cat lady.

swallow

this week’s cocktail is a version of last week’s blueberry french 75, only it’s made with fresh raspberries and lime juice (instead of blueberries and lemon juice.)

1/2 fresh squeezed lime

1 oz gin

6 raspberries

a little sugar

prosecco or cava or champagne

muddle the raspberries and sugar in a shaker.  add the gin and lime juice.  throw a few ice cubes in to chill and shake gently.  strain into a cocktail glass and top with your choice of bubbly (i used prosecco.)  makes 1.  and i’m tellin’ ya, one knocks me for a loop.

i went to the sundays only flea market this past weekend for inspiration purposes, as i have been uninspired as of late.  i haven’t crafted anything in what seems like forEVER.  unfortunately, i didn’t get much inspiration.  i did, however, find a set of two handmade vintage curtain panels with one valance in a great black and white and gray triangles fabric for $3.

i bought them for the fabric only, but i’ll be darned, one panel happens to fit my back door, so i hung it.

why are you hanging curtains when you’re supposed to be packing up and moving, you ask?  cuz i’m an idiot.

i also bought these:

they’re a tad danish-y and a tad teak-y, but then again, somethin’ ain’t quite right about them, either.

FISHIES.

whatever.

the price was right.

the sun has finally come out after a week of blech.  i’ll be fighting the paparazzi glare with my flea market 70s foster grants.  they’re GIGANTIC. and PERFECT.

stuff

memorial day weekend = half-price sales at thrift stores.

so i went back and got the threadbare, worn kilim pillow i had left behind when i bought my first one.  i soaked it overnight but it still looks dirty.  i’m nuthin’ but a dirty hippie now.

speaking of hippie, shoot me now cuz i also got a small kilim bird purse.  i must’ve bought 100 pocketbooks in the past month or so.

ok, well, 4.

but i could’ve bought 100.  i’m the lady in the thrift store talking to herself saying, “no no no no no you don’t need this.”

sometimes i listen to the voices, sometimes i don’t.

these are instances when i didn’t listen.

at first i thought that “H” one could’ve been a vintage hermes bag from the 70s.  it isn’t.

but if people ask, i will say, “yes, yes, as a matter of fact it IS an hermes.”

cuz a status bag is IMPORTANT.

no it’s not.

also – posters.

more effin’ posters

the one i like best cuz it’s a lion and i’m a leo is ripped and has mold on it.  yup, breathing hazards and less than perfect condition will not stop me from buying 70s polish art posters.  mold schmold.

in better condition is the all-too-familiar “why do i buy cat stuff when i can’t stand cats” poster.

say it with me.

half-price.

which in my world translates to practically free.

and also it’s just kinda awesome.

and yet a little scary.  perhaps the stuff of nightmares.

these are cyrk posters by hubert hilscher.  cyrk mean circus.  i’m brilliant like that.

and let me also admit this.  who do i think i am calling myself a pro at thrifting?  i thought i would brave the crowds at goodwill this morning before work cuz it was half-price off everything in the store and i had my eyes on a pair of jeans i wanted to distress and a couple tee shirts and an 18″ x 24″ empty frame that would be perfect for my newly matted screenprint thrifted last year.  so i was right there at 9 AM.  trouble is, they opened at 8 AM.  the place was a mob scene.  i felt like such a rookie.  ashamed, i am.  the frame was gone, darn it, but everything else was there, along with this enamel ladle in size huge that i didn’t own yet and am not sure how i’ve lived life this long without.

for size comparison:

also –

since it’s the kickoff to summer unofficially, i officially looked for a new (to me) summer cocktail to try and i found this one.  a blueberry french 75.

fresh blueberries, fresh squeezed lemon juice, gin and champagne.

lemme say for the record – it might look girlie, but it packs a WALLOP.  not for the faint of heart.  i think i was buzzed on one sip. but i have to say, i’m pretty sure this is going in the ol’ cocktail rotation, with or without blueberries.  plus i feel pretty sophisticated saying i’m drinking a french 75 and as we all know, the meaning of life is all about fake sophistication.

kilim

i caved.

i succumbed to the kilim pillow.

for the LIFE of me, i do not understand the appeal of a kilim pillow.

when i think pillow, i think comfy.  non-itchy.

kilim does not equate comfy in my mind.

and yet there it was at the thrift store, looking all vintage-y and all broken-in boho and all of $3 so i bought it.

yup, the internet pressures of must-have decor grabbed me, gripped me and now i’ve jumped on the kilim pillow train of discomfort.

kilim pillow softness quotient:

zero.

itchiest, roughest thing i’ve ever felt in my life.

that said, if you wear several layers of clothing (and a parka) and lean against it, you don’t notice.

just prior to finding this i spotted a half-price kilim vest in goodwill and bought it figuring i’d cut her up and sew ‘er into said pillow.  i was riding the planetary aligned kilim wave that week.  (rug and god’s eye were ebay purchases.  i’ve been cheating on my thrift stores with ebay.)

no need now.  i only need one itchy pillow in my pillow repertoire.

wedding card

ok, so who’s with me?

who else doesn’t like the traditional store-bought wedding card?

i’ve got a wedding to attend and the couple is COOL.  with cool friends.  they’re new yorkers, for cryin’ out loud.  ya can’t just show up with the CVS “good luck on your journey” card now, can you?

no, you can’t.

i saw this clothespin

very very very very very very very cute.

and simple.

i like simple.

so i painted one.

and attached it to some neon card stock.

along with my sincere wishes for a long, happy marriage inside.

KISSING CLOTHESPIN!

hung and fresh.

how i like my grooms laundry.

clothespin humor.

life’s a bleach and then you dry.

hallmark….call me….

chair

thank GOODNESS i found a chipped veneer vintage molded wood chair missing two of its chair foot gliders because i’m not sure i own enough places to sit my ass.

mini skirt pantyhose wearing broads BEWARE!  SIT AT YOUR OWN RISK!  same with you long sweater wearers!  this be SNAG CENTRAL.

was it the super-sized lunchtime margarita at the local mexican restaurant that compromised my superhero non-hoarder willpower and allowed me to fork over six clams for this unmarked vintage less-than-perfect chair thing?  i think yes.

i need to look at the glass half-full.  it actually HAS two chair foot gliders, rather than it’s missing two gliders.

yes indeed, another chair that i will never sit and watch an entire movie on.

kitsch

one buck for less than a buck.

not any old ordinary buck.

a 3D buck.

a 3D buck postcard mounted on fake wood paneling.

keepin’ it classy and keepin’ it highbrow around here, always.
